According to a recent data report collected and created by our editorial team, California tops the list of US states with the highest likelihood of producing an Olympic gold medalist.

How We Conducted the Study

We calculated the total number of athletes from each state who have won a gold medal at one of the latest three Summer Olympic Games and the latest three Winter Olympic Games, which are as follows: the London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo Olympic Games, and the Sochi 2014, Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

California – The Golden State Which Produced the Most Gold Medalists

During our research, we have found that California is the most successful state at the Olympics, with 78 gold medal-winning athletes from the latest six Olympic Games.

We have also discovered that Allyson Felix, who hails from Los Angeles, is one of the most decorated Californian Olympians, with seven Olympic golds, three silvers and one bronze.

The Golden State dominates when it comes to the pool, and Mark Spitz is California’s most decorated Olympic swimmer with nine medals, seven of which are gold.

Florida and New York Rank in the Silver and Bronze Positions

Our ranking shows Florida, in the second position, with 24 gold medal-winning athletes from the last six games. It turns out that swimmer Caeleb Dressel from Green Cove Springs in Florida won the most gold medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics across all sports and athletes, with five golds won in the pool. The 27-year-old now has seven gold medals in total from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Taking the 3rd place is New York, with 21 gold medal-winning athletes. Rai Benjamin from Mount Vernon, New York, is a track and field athlete who won gold and silver medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Our team notes that the 12-time Olympic medalist and six-time gold medal-winner Ryan Lochte hails from Rochester and ranks as the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history in total medals, along with Natalie Coughlin, Dara Torres, and Jenny Thompson.

Other US States Ranked with Several Gold Medal-Winning Athletes

Our study shows there are several other gold winning states, apart from the first three states mentioned in our ranking.

Minnesota – 19 Gold Medals Won

Minnesota is ranked fourth state-producing gold medalist, with 19 gold medal-winning athletes. The North Star State dominates the Winter Olympics, with a total of 103 medals won since the Winter Games began in 1924.

We learned during our research that Lindsay Vonn is the only Minnesotan to have won a gold medal in an individual event at the Winter Olympics. But we have also discovered that hockey player Jenny Potter has won the most significant number of Winter Olympic medals, with four.

Illinois – 18 Gold-winning Athletes

Illinois has the fifth-highest number of gold medal-winning athletes, with 18 gold medal-winners. The Prairie State has won 6% of the USA Winter Olympic medals since the start of these games, with 45 medals, and its best winter sport is speed skiing, with 13 medals.

We have found that swimmer Ryan Murphy, from Palos Heights, is one the state’s most decorated Olympians, with four gold medals and the former men’s 100-meter backstroke world record.

Texas – 16 Gold Medals Won

The sixth place in our ranking goes to Texas, with 16 gold medal winners. During the compilation of our study report, we have found that amongst Texas’ gold medal-winning roster from the past six games are Plano’s BMX racer Connor Fields at Rio 2016 and Abilene’s David Boudia, who won the gold in the 10m platform dive at London 2012.

New Jersey – 15 Gold Medalists

In seventh place in our ranking is New Jersey, with 15 gold medalists. Our report shows that New Brunswick-born Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone holds the world record and Olympic Games record for the 400m hurdles at 24. The Garden State’s best sport has been basketball in the past six games, with four gold medalists.

Last but Not Least: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana Show Proven Gold Potential

Pennsylvania is in eighth place in our ranking, with 13 gold medal-winning athletes. Moreover, we have found that in London 2012, Jamie Lynn Corkish won the 50m rifle three positions gold medal, and the late Philadelphia-born Kobe Bryant won gold at the London 2012 Games, too.

With 11 gold medalists, Michigan is in penultimate place in our ranking

Saginaw-born tennis legend Serena Williams won the women’s singles and doubles with sister Venus in London in 2012.We have found that West Bloomfield’s Meryl Davis won the gold medal for ice dancing with partner Charlie White, making them the first Americans to win an Olympic gold medal in ice dancing.

Concluding our ranking, we have Indiana, with 10 gold medalists. We discovered that South Bend-born basketballer Skylar Diggins-Smith won gold with her team in Tokyo in 2020, and Indianapolis’ Lauren Holiday won gold with the USA soccer team in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.
